Evaluation

brief... For my A2 portfolio, I was to film and create a music video as well as two ancillary texts, in my case; a digipack and a magazine advertisement.
There are many conventions for various types of media texts, specifically for a music video there are conventions that apply to certain genres as well as those that stand for music videos as a whole...
The actual name of my chosen artists is ‘Tegan and Sara’. When it came to thinking about possible names I noticed the initials of them were the place to start. Many artists that have a few albums or hit singles under their belt are well established, either nationally or worldwide thus meaning their initials are all that is needed to present who they are, just like anything that is well known, for example, magazine brands such as ‘Kerrang’ would not bother about half the masthead being covered up as the name is already known enough for the audience to know what it is. From the initials I sat and researched names beginning with T and S to pick two names that worked nice next to each other, this making a pleasing name like Tegan and Sara. After a while of deliberating I decided on ‘Tilly and Sierra’.
The video, shooting, choices, mise-en-scene, lighting, control, changes, good and bad aspects…
For my video, I used audience feedback, research on existing Tegan and Sara music videos and also videos from artists of the same genre, e.g. Vampire Weekend. From this I decided on making the video solely narrative and performance…

When filming both artists on screen, because I was not using twins and I was using the same person in different clothes, I had to film it in two shots.

Here I splitt the screen, filiming at one half for the shots instead of the whole screen. I had to film her on one side of the bed on one side of the screen and then the other side of the bed at that side of the screen. It came together in the editing by using the...effect which enabled me to remove half the screen, revealing the other clip as that half of it. I think it weorked well and did what i needed and wanted to do, however, the outcome looks un proffesional as i must of moved the camera out of position when filming, meaning there is a clear line down the middle instead of it blending and looking  like one shot.

I used this effect in several shots throughout the video so both 'Tilly and Sierra' could be seen on the screen at the same time. In this shot (picture on the right) because i had to walk aside Tilly with the camera, and in the shot of Sierra i would not have walked in the exact same or ended up in the exact same position i did at the end of the other shot, the background (shop) did not work well when the two clips were connected. Although it looks un proffessional, as many times as i tried i could never find a way to 100% replicate the walk and end position.

I also used chroma key along with M... I started with filming the clips using a green screen background, then i made the background the same colour background, making them both look like they're in the same place. Apart from the blending issues around Tilly and Sierra, i think that when the chroma key was used it worked well and gives the video more effects.

I also included a large amount of visual interpretation of lyrics. I did this for the chorus and some of the lines in the chorus's too. This feature is used in handfulls of music videos since the first one. It is first seen on the Bob Dylan video ' ' and also ... who are the same genre of music as Tegan and Sara. ...
